Half-time: Aston Villa 0 Chelsea 0

first_imgChelsea were frustrated in a goalless first half at Villa Park after Nemanja Matic saw what looked like the opener ruled out.The Serbian bundled in at the far post late in the half but Chelsea’s celebrations were cut short as referee Chris Foy chalked it off for handball. The Blues looked the more likely to score, with recalled Brazilians Oscar and Willian both firing narrowly wide. The fit-again Fernando Torres has impressed with his workrate but fired wastefully wide of the near post in his only clear sight of goal. The home side’s best moments have come on the break, with Christian Benteke the focal point. The big Belgian headed wide from Fabian Delph’s teasing cross and also fashioned a firmly struck volley just wide of Petr Cech’s far post. After Manchester City’s 2-0 win at Hull earlier in the day, Chelsea will not be wanting to drop crucial points in the title race. However Jose Mourinho also has one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League second leg at home to Galatasaray and has shuffled his pack, with Samuel Eto’o, Frank Lampard and Andre Schurrle dropping out.Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta; Matic, Ramires; Willian, Oscar, Hazard; Torres. Subs: Schwarzer, Kalas, Mikel, Lampard, Schurrle, Salah, Ba.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Africa’s carbon-trading potential

first_imgAfrican companies could invest in cleanenergy technology such as solar panels toearn carbon credits, which they would thesell to more polluting industries.(Image: Graeme Williams,MediaClubSouthAfrica.com. For morefree photos, visit the image library.)Delegates at the first all-African carbon forum in Dakar, Senegal, agreed the continent’s entrepreneurs need cash to break into the expanding international carbon emissions trading market. The carbon forum matched investors seeking a higher greenhouse emission allowance than permitted by the Kyoto Protocol with profitable projects that cut greenhouse gases in developing or emerging countries. Each investment translates into “certified emission reduction credits” (CER).The investor buys the right to pollute by helping someone else not to pollute.Projects that come under this scheme, known as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) include tree-planting, and renewable wind and solar energy initiatives, which help cut greenhouse gases.Africa-based projects currently make up about 4% of a nascent industry that already turns over US$57-billion (R450-billion) a year. Entrepreneurs in Africa say the continent cannot afford to fall behind.“The lack of ownership by African investors is one of the major constraints for the future development of this continent,” said Thierno Bocar Tall, director of a regional biofuel and renewable energy project. “This market is destined to grow, and Africa, particularly its private sector, must develop a larger presence in it.”BenefitsSub-Saharan Africa produces less energy than Spain, leaving about 500-million people without electricity, according to Dana Rysankova, a World Bank energy specialist in the Africa Department.By boosting its participation in carbon reduction projects, Africa’s private sector can spur economic growth, boost energy production and reduce carbon emissions according to Ryasnkova. But to even begin meeting their own energy needs, African governments will need to dedicate 6% of their annual budgets to their energy sectors, she said.Increasing investmentsAbout 3 200 low-emissions energy projects have been identified across sub-Saharan Africa, which are seeking investments of $175-billion (R1.4-trillion).If financed, officials at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change says these projects have the potential to cut global carbon emissions by more than 700-million tons per year, while quadrupling sub-Saharan Africa’s current level of energy production. The World Bank recently signed Senegal’s first CDM with the state-run Rural Electrification Agency to provide 1.5-million energy-efficient light bulbs to families in rural areas. Investors and entrepreneurs have identified 24 other projects across the country, including a wind farm in Saint-Louis 185km from Dakar, which aims to reduce the country’s gas and diesel dependency by producing 30 000 MW of energy a year. The UN Environment Programme (Unep) has invested $30-million (R235-million) in building up local expertise in carbon trading in Africa.“Africa has an enormous potential to be eligible for more investment,” said Bakary Kanté of Unep.Financial barriersFor Mario Lundovic, an adviser at the African Development Bank, most African banks are too small to interest large-scale carbon reduction projects.Private-public investment partnerships are complicated to pull off anywhere, but particularly in Africa, according to Moctar Diaw, director of sustainable energies in the Senegalese cement industry. He says he wants to reduce how much energy his industry uses, but finding investment has been tough.Source: Irin NewsDo you have queries or comments about this article? Bryant, Correa Top MLB rookies

first_imgNEW YORK — Big expectations followed Kris Bryant and Carlos Correa from the moment each was drafted just a few years ago.It didn’t take long for both to deliver.Bryant was a unanimous pick as NL Rookie of the Year on Nov. 16, and Correa took the American League prize in a close vote by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Correa explained on a conference call from his home in Puerto Rico, where he said thousands of proud supporters were waiting to celebrate with him. “It really means a lot not only for them, but me as well.”The surprise top pick in the 2012 amateur draft, Correa recalled how some questioned whether he warranted that selection. But by June this year, he was starting at shortstop in the majors and leading the young Houston Astros toward the playoffs.Bryant, chosen second overall by the Chicago Cubs in 2013, made his big league debut on April 17. The third baseman quickly became an All-Star on a rising team that also reached the postseason.“I think we’re in very similar situations in that we’re surrounded by a lot of young guys,” Bryant said. “I think the only expectations that really matter are the ones you put on yourself. I definitely exceeded my own expectations.”The 23-year-old Bryant batted .275 and led big league rookies with 26 homers, 31 doubles and 99 RBIs as Chicago returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2008.Seeking their first championship since 1908, the Cubs were swept by the New York Mets in the NLCS.“I think there is a way to top this year and that’s to win the World Series,” Bryant said. “I think heading into next year this whole experience is going to help myself and our whole team in general.”Bryant received all 30 first-place votes for 150 points in balloting by the BBWAA. San Francisco third baseman Matt Duffy was second with 70 points, and Pittsburgh infielder Jung Ho Kang third with 28 points.Correa received 17 firsts and 13 seconds for 124 points. Cleveland shortstop Francisco Lindor was second with 13 firsts, 14 seconds and two thirds for 109 points, and Minnesota designated hitter Miguel Sano was third with 20 points.Correa began this year in Double-A and made his major league debut June 8. He hit .279 with 22 homers, 68 RBIs and 14 steals, helping the Astros make their first postseason appearance in a decade. The youngest position player in the major leagues, he turned 21 in September.“It’s like a season that I only thought was going to happen in a dream,” said Correa, who acknowledged the metal plate in his right leg caused him pain much of the year.Correa’s 2014 season with Class A Lancaster was cut short in June because of a broken right ankle.Houston’s only previous Rookie of the Year was Jeff Bagwell, who won the 1991 NL honor. Bryant is the Cubs’ sixth winner and first since catcher Geovany Soto in 2008.Bryant and Correa each had the $507,500 minimum salary in the majors.Houston gave Correa his debut after making sure he won’t be eligible for arbitration until following the 2018 season.Bryant was left in the minors at the start of the season despite showing off his prodigious power during an outstanding spring training. Chicago brought up Bryant after waiting just long enough to ensure he cannot become a free agent until after the 2021 season.“I think I played with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder this year, and I think it’s good to play that way sometimes,” Bryant said. “In high school I kind of got labeled like I didn’t really care about playing just because I was so relaxed out there, but that couldn’t be any further from the truth.”___By Mike Fitzpatrick, AP Baseball Writer. AP Baseball Writer Ronald Blum, and AP Sports Writer Jay Cohen in Chicago contributed TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

It’s gone pretty hostile now and I don’t think anybody wants to see that.”The visitors carved out the only chance of a drab first half when Oliver Norwood found Gary Madine at the back post, only for Keiren Westwood to make a smart save.Madine appealed for a penalty after tangling with Michael Hector at a corner after 15 minutes but both teams lacked quality. “I didn’t think either side deserved to win it,” said Wilder.Steve Bruce brought on George Boyd at half-time and it almost worked immediately as Steven Fletcher sent an overhead kick over the bar from his cross. Rolando Aarons almost put the hosts ahead on the hour when he beat his man and struck a fierce left-foot effort that Dean Henderson parried.Wednesday should have led when Aarons’ brilliant cross was met by Sam Hutchinson eight yards out but the midfielder shot straight at Henderson.Bruce said he did not see the incident involving O’Connell. “On the whole the two bunches of supporters were excellent,” he added. “[Derby games] are great to watch.” 19 Stearman Share on Twitter (s 79′) 27 Iorfa 21 Duffy Share on WhatsApp 11 Hogan Reuse this contentlast_img read more

Opinion Preseason prestige a potentially dangerous burden for Ohio State football

OSU coach Urban Meyer stands during the 4th annual Student Appreciation Day on April 11 at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Credit: Samantha Hollingshead / Photo EditorComing into the year, it was hard to argue that the Ohio State football team — the one returning almost all of its playmakers and coming off a dominant run in the first-ever College Football Playoff — was not the top college squad for the 2015 season. After the Associated Press Top 25 poll was released on Sunday, however, it is nearly impossible to make a case for any other team heading in.The Buckeyes received all 61 possible first-place votes to secure the title of the first team ever to be selected No. 1 unanimously in the preseason poll — and that’s still without a No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart. It is an achievement for OSU and a testament to the talent coach Urban Meyer — now entering his fourth season with the Scarlet and Gray — and the rest of the staff has assembled and developed.Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, preseason championships don’t typically get pennants hung in the stadium. That’s not to say they won’t make it two-for-two in CFP championships. In fact, it would take a very strong case to convince me that they won’t repeat, barring major injuries or unforeseen circumstances — though that didn’t stop them last year. But, if recent history is any indication, there is nothing resembling a sure championship anymore.Sure, the Chicago Bulls and New York Yankees of the 1990s were sure coming into the year that they would take home the title, and did so with little trouble. But more recently, the 2014-15 Kentucky Wildcats were hyped as one of the best college basketball teams ever. They lived up to the hype with an undefeated regular season, but after narrowly escaping Notre Dame in the Elite Eight, lost to Wisconsin in the Final Four. The 2007 New England Patriots were a similar tale, making a mockery out of their regular season en route to the first 16-0 season, but eventually lost to a seemingly far inferior New York Giants team in the Super Bowl. The 2002 Miami Hurricanes were one of the most impressive batches of future NFL talent ever put together on a college team and were coming off a national title in the previous season. Well, about all OSU fans know how their season ended. Those three examples are teams that did get the job done throughout the regular season only to fall flat at the end. It’s not even including teams such as the 2012-13 Los Angeles Lakers or 2011 Philadelphia Eagles who not only didn’t win a championship, but just barely even made the playoffs.Sky-high expectations can be used as a confidence boost or rallying point, but too many times they can also be used to topple a team from the top.At the 2015 Big Ten Media Days in Chicago, Meyer mentioned the difficulties of getting his 2007 Florida Gators team — one coming off a national championship the year before — to maintain that same level of grit and intensity from the year prior. That team, despite possessing a lot of the same talent from the championship team and the Heisman Trophy winner in quarterback Tim Tebow, only went 9-4.Whether it is a massive target on a team’s back, a loss of drive and determination or simply the pressure of living up to the expectations thrust upon you, it is usually easier for a team vastly considered to be the best to fail to get it done. And for the Buckeyes, this is an unprecedented amount of expectations, with every voter the AP has expecting them to be the best. It’s a tall mountain to climb to reach the peak, and sometimes when you start so high up it can be even more difficult to get the momentum to keep climbing. Both repeating as champions and living up to incredible projections are things that can trip up any team. Managing to keep the team upright is something that — having come up flat the year after a championship team before — Meyer doesn’t just monitor, but actively deals with all season long. read more

Pellegrini unsure how long Wilshere will be out of action

first_imgWest Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini revealed that Jack Wilshere’s latest injury setback is taking longer than expected to recover fromThe former Arsenal midfielder’s start to life at West Ham continues to be put on hold after sustaining another ankle injury this month.Wilshere had undergone surgery on his left ankle in September and made his return for West Ham in a five-minute cameo in their 3-0 win over Newcastle at the beginning of this month. But now Wilshere is struggling with a problem in his right ankle and will be sidelined for West Ham’s trip to Fulham on Saturday in the Premier League.Victor Wanyama, Tottenham Hotspur, Premier LeaguePochettino admits Wanyama remains in his Spurs plans Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Kenyan international, Victor Wanyama, was the protagonist of a summer transfer saga, but in the end, he is set to stay at Tottenham Hotspur.“Is it more serious than first thought?” Maybe, because when he felt the pain it was in his ‘good’ ankle – it was not the ankle where he had the surgery,” said Pellegrini, according to Daily Mirror.“We hoped it was just a pain and that he could adjust for two or three days but for different things it has been longer than we expected.“It is very difficult to know. Maybe the doctor can answer better than me – on Wednesday he did a medical examination and when we get the results we will know.”Wilshere has made just five appearances for West Ham this season after arriving on a free transfer from Arsenal in the summer.last_img read more
