Tech Billionaires Donate Large To Cancer Research

first_imgIn May, American billionaire Larry Ellison of Oracle origins announced his $200 million donation to a new cancer research center. The interdisciplinary facility, to be called Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine of USC, is expected to break ground by November. The center’s goal, as reported by Fortune.com, is to bring experts from different specialties together “to transform the way cancer is treated”. Besides medical scientists, this would even include chefs to advise on diet in medicine.Meanwhile, billionaire Sean Parker of Napster announced his own $250 million contribution to form the Parker Institute. His funding, he says, will be divided over time amongst six partner centers: MD Anderson Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Stanford Medicine, Penn Medicine, UCSF and UCLA.This collaboration aims to accelerate the progress in scientific discoveries in the field of cancer immunotherapy because the centers will be able to collaborate and pool their intellectual property so that scientists at any center will have access to any breakthroughs at any other of the centers.Parker says that immunotherapy has seen success in some areas, such as melanoma and blood cancers, and believes there is no reason why it shouldn’t be applicable to all tumor types.“At some point I had a hunch that the immune system played a really important role in protecting us from cancer,” he says. “That was, for a long time, a very controversial theory.”This is the basis for his bringing scientists into an environment where they can cooperate and collaborate and where the best ideas can get funded.“I’ve been interested in life sciences for as long as I can remember,” says Parker. “I have a deep personal interest in immunology because I have autoimmune diseases myself. Cancer knows no boundaries. It afflicts people everywhere.”Copyright ©2016Look to the Starslast_img read more

Colorado baker back in court over 2nd LGBT bias allegation

first_imgDENVER — Attorneys for a Colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple on religious grounds say the state is punishing him again for not baking a cake celebrating a gender transition.Lawyers for Jack Phillips argued Tuesday in U.S. court in Denver to try to stop the state from taking action against him over the new discrimination allegation. The U.S. Supreme Court issued a limited ruling for the baker in the gay couple’s 2012 case.Phillips is suing to overturn the Colorado Civil Rights Commission’s June finding that he discriminated against Denver attorney Autumn Scardina because she’s transgender. The state has asked the lawsuit to be dismissed, but Senior Judge Wiley Y. Daniel said he was inclined to let it go forward. He said he’d issue a ruling later.Colleen Slevin, The Associated Presslast_img read more

Keep us posted on how it goes. ‘Win with Walt’ Madden challenge detailsThe goal: Win the Super Bowl in Madden 2016 with Walt Hickey as your starting quarterback. How to participate:Make a custom player on a team of your choice with the Madden ratings below. In the event we haven’t listed a rating — I wasn’t evaluated for several defensive categories — just enter the overall rating of 12 in that field.Make this person your quarterback, on whatever team you’d like.Release all other quarterbacks on the team and play through a season of football, make it through the playoffs and then win the Super Bowl on an All-Pro or higher difficulty setting.Don’t egregiously cheat. That means don’t tinker with player ratings and don’t spend the whole season just running the ball. Last February, we found out when we teamed up with the folks at EA Sports to turn a normal, lazy, non-athletic lout into a Madden NFL avatar. That lout happened to be me.I attended a private, faux combine and was thrust into a series of simulations to figure out just how bad walk-ons like me would be in the NFL. While I ran around a football field in Florida, the Madden ratings team was measuring my football skills — things like throw accuracy, speed, trucking and kick power. When the EA Sports people used me as a quarterback, the Giants went an average of 2.9 wins per simulated season. Now it’s your turn. Our sports podcast Hot Takedown is launching a crowdsourced challenge to find out if someone has stick skills so profound that they can use a weak, slow and inaccurate average-Joe QB to win it all. Mobile data shootout dedicated hotspot or tethered smartphone

first_imgSome of us need to be a little more connected than others. While smartphones are getting better at handling some of the one-off tasks we once had to open a laptop for, the truth is that neither a smartphone or tablet can replace my laptop 100% of the time. As a result, my laptop still travels with me most of the time. Like many people, my laptop doesn’t have a dedicated mobile connection, and I’m not always near free WiFi. This leaves me with one of two options, I can either pay for the hotspot service on my phone, or I can carry around a separate mobile hotspot. Both of these options accomplish the same task, but which option is the best way to offer my laptop a mobile data connection?Since three of the four major US carriers are either already deploying or about to unveil their LTE network, we’re going to be talking about LTE today. If I’m going to pay for a separate data connection for my WiFi-only devices, I’m going to want the best performance and the fastest connection possible. For the tests, I compared the LTE hotspot function in the Verizon Wireless HTC Rezound and the MiFi 4620L, more commonly known as the Verizon Jetpack. Each device was subjected to 25 speed tests back to back, followed by streaming two HD movies to two devices, simultaneously.SpeedTest – HTC RezoundData speedsDuring our speed evaluations, the HTC Rezound routinely came out on top. Out of 25 speed tests performed on SpeedTest.net, the Rezound averaged 18Mbps down and 9.5Mbps up, with a ping of 34. The Jetpack averaged a much lower 12Mbps down and 6.3Mbps up, with an average ping of 71.These tests were performed moments apart, and when once device was broadcasting a hotspot the other device was completely powered down. There were instances where the Jetpack would have a burst of speed that brought the device much closer to 18-19Mbps, but this would only last for a moment, and the speed would immediately drop back down. The Rezound’s connection was routinely more stable, offering a significantly more consistent connection. When placed in between two laptops to stream HD versions of Tron and Iron Man 2 on two different laptops, each device was the only thing in the room that was powered on. Both devices streamed the entirety of both films, but in two different points during the run with the Jetpack playback was temporarily stopped so the laptop could buffer more of the film. This didn’t happen with the Rezound at all, in fact the videos loaded faster and played without incident until the end. Despite being able to offer the faster, more stable connection, the Rezound also gets ridiculously hot when it streams for particularly long. If you are running the device as a hotspot for more than an hour, you’re not likely to want to use it as a phone without a Bluetooth headset. The Jetpack did get noticeably warmer, but since you don’t have to hold that to your face it’s not nearly such an issue.Battery lifeThe real benefit to having a dedicated mobile hotspot comes in when you consider battery life. It’s already somewhat challenging to get your HTC Rezound through a full 14 hour day without killing the battery, but it’s impossible when forcing the device to act as an internet connection for other devices. In order for the Rezound to act as a hotspot and a phone, you’ll need either and extra battery or an external power supply of some kind. The Jetpack 4620L comes with a 1500 mAh battery that, according to Verizon Wireless, will get you through about five hours. I found it to get a little closer to three hoursif you’re really trying to get some data out of it. The Jetpack has an option for a 3000 mAh battery, which is much better at getting you through the day. Essentially, unless you only need the hotspot for an hour or two, you’re looking at an extended battery either way, it’s just whether or not that battery is for your phone or for the hotspot. In the end it all comes down to price for many people. You’ve already shelled out the cash for the phone, so you have to choose between just adding the hotspot data to your phone, or pay for a new device on a new 2year agreement with a monthly fee attached. Data plans for smartphones that include a data plan start at $50/month, which is the same amount as the monthly rate for a standalone hotspot, only the hotspot has 5GB of data at that price instead of 4 that you share between the phone and the hotspot. The highest plan for a hotspot is $80/month, which gives you 10GB of data. For your phone, you can get 12GB that you share between your phone and your hotspot feature for $100/month. If you go with a 2 year agreement the Jetpack will only run you $50, but you’re tied to that device and that data plan for the next two years. When you’re limited to 2GB or 5GB in a month, whether or not you’re able to reach 12Mbps or 19Mbps doesn’t matter quite as much, since you’re likely to eat up your data pretty quickly if you’re consuming enough data that speeds like that matter on a regular basis. While a detached hotspot may take less stress off of the device, the added cost in having to maintain and pay for yet another device just doesn’t offer enough of a benefit to justify carrying it around all of the time. It seems like it woudl make much more sense to pay for the hotspot service on the phone, and invest in an extra battery or maybe a Powerbag or something to keep the device charged when absolutely necessary.last_img read more

Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article Thursday 27 Oct 2016, 8:11 PM Oct 27th 2016, 8:11 PM A MOBILE ICE-CREAM van, which sold ice-lollies and cones to children around parks and sports venues, was being used as a cover for a major drugs distribution business, Limerick circuit criminal court heard today. The owner of the van, Paul Collopy (41), started out in life transporting coal on a horse and cart from the age of 10, but after venturing into the ice cream business, he discovered it was the perfect way to hide and sell drugs.Paul Collopy pleaded guilty at Limerick circuit court to one count of possessing cocaine for sale or supply at his home, Glenbrook, Bloodmill Rd, Ballysmion, on November 25, 2014Detective Garda David McGrath, Limerick Drugs Squad, told the court that when gardaí searched the van they discovered over €6,000 worth of cocaine, one batch was found in a lunchbox concealed under the bonnet near the engine, while the other was discovered in “a money bag” near a window in the van where ice-cream would be served to unsuspecting members of the public. The bag also contained two “tick lists” in which the names of people, “who owed money for drugs”, appeared. The drugs invoice showed €45,000 worth of cocaine had been sold. When gardaí approached Collopy, who had been standing under the bonnet of the van, he slammed it shut and was seen dropping a spoon and a digital weighing scales.Gardaí also found €5,000 in cash in Collopy’s house at Glenbrook, Bloodmill Road, Ballysimon.Collopy, whose family have no criminal connections, had amassed 70 convictions prior to his arrest, the court heard.Collopy was convicted in December 2007 of selling €17,000 worth of cocaine, and sentenced to five years in jail. He was released in 2011, however in October 2014, he was caught in Ennis with heroin worth €28,000 for sale or supply and was sentenced to six years with the final two year suspended last November.Detective Garda McGrath said Collopy was a “chronic cocaine and crack cocaine addict”.My own opinion and the opinion of the divisional drugs squad would be that he is a drugs wholesaler rather than a street dealer. He would be giving the drugs to others to break down for street dealing. Short URLlast_img read more

Stephen King has his own idea for how Game of Thrones should

Tata Motors continues to face Moodys negative reviews

first_imgTata Motors’ logo.Facebook/ Tata MotorsTata Motors Ltd’s rating has been lowered by Moody’s Investors Service from Ba2 to Ba3 citing long prone negative outlook. The downgrade in the ratings was because of the sustaining fall in the company’s credit profile. Ba2 and Ba3 reflect the company’s senior unsecured instruments rating.Considering the losses the company is facing due to the fully owned subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover and the delay of the company in stabilising its free cash flow has resulted in the downgrade, explained Kaustubh Chaubal, Moody’s Vice President and Senior Credit Officer. ReutersMoody’s reports state that the Tata Motors credit matrix was weaker than the credit rating company. The motor company had a debt of about 5.3 times the expected margins with about 0.9 per cent of adjusted Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margins. As per Moody’s analysis, the leverage of the company will remain five times, EBIDTA margins under 3 per cent and the cash flow will remain stagnant but negative for the next two years.”The negative outlook on TML’s ratings principally reflects the execution risks related to the timely turnaround of the company’s operations amid a subdued operating environment, driven by rising competition,” Chaubal told ANI. Rohit Suri, President & Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover India with 2018 Range RoverThe automobile sector is facing stagnancy due to overcapacity, taxations, tightening liquidity and shrinking dealer networks. Snapchat source code leaked and posted to GitHub

first_imgSource code for what is believed to be a small part of Snapchat’s iOS application was posted on GitHub after being leaked back in May. After being notified, Snap Inc., Snapchat’s parent company, immediately filed a DMCA request to GitHub to get the code removed. A copy of the request was found by a ‘security researcher’ tweeting from the handle @x0rz, who shared a link to a copy of the request on GitHub: You can read the DMCA request in full here. Part of the Snap Inc. DMCA request to GitHubThe initial leak back in May was caused by an update to the Snapchat iOS application. A spokesperson for Snap Inc. explained to CNET: “An iOS update in May exposed a small amount of our source code and we were able to identify the mistake and rectify it immediately… We discovered that some of this code had been posted online and it has been subsequently removed. This did not compromise our application and had no impact on our community.” This code was then published by a someone using the name Khaled Alshehri, believed to be based in Pakistan, on GitHub. The repository created – called Source-SnapChat – has now been taken down. A number of posts linked to the GitHub account suggests that the leaker had tried to contact Snapchat but had been ignored. “I will post it again until I get a reply” they said. Leaked Snapchat code is still being traded privately Although GitHub has taken the repo down, it’s not hard to find people claiming they have a copy of the code that they’re willing to trade: Now the code is out in the wild it will take more than a DMCA request to get things under control. Although it would appear the leaked code isn’t substantial enough to give much away to potential cybercriminals, it’s likely that Snapchat is now working hard to make the changes required to tighten its security. New travel report China to dominate Asia outbound travel by 2030

first_imgTripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, and The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), a global management consulting firm, have today released a jointly published new report on the travel and tourism industry titled, Winning the Next Billion Asian Travellers – Starting with China. The report showed that by 2030, more than 50% of the growth in global traffic will come from Asia Pacific and 49% of all passenger traffic globally will be within Asia Pacific or between the region and the rest of the world. Growing Chinese Interest in Long-Haul and Exotic Destinations Furthermore, Chinese consumers continue to emphasise that they trust recommendations from people they know, as well as online opinion. Meeting the Needs and Expectations of Chinese Travellers “China’s fast-growing outbound tourism market represents significant and unprecedented opportunities for businesses around the world. Companies that deeply understand and cater to the preferences of Chinese travellers can differentiate themselves and win market share,” said Lily Cheng, Managing Director of TripAdvisor China. “Language barriers and cultural differences are two of the biggest obstacles that Chinese travellers face when travelling abroad. Businesses that offer various services and amenities that make Chinese travellers feel more welcome, such as Mandarin-speaking staff, travel guide information in Chinese, photos in menus, and acceptance of international cards like China UnionPay which are dominant amongst Chinese travellers, will stand a greater chance of attracting Chinese guests and winning them over,“ added Ms. Cheng.  A recent study conducted by daodao.com, revealed some interesting insights into the psyche of Chinese travellers. For example, they prefer to settle payment on arrival, and while less experienced travellers favour to book through a Chinese online travel agency (OTA), the more experienced are likely to book through a foreign OTA site or directly with a property. Additionally, free in-room Wi-Fi connection, air-conditioning, Chinese tea, snacks and instant-noodles are amongst the most desirable hotel room amenities. According to the report, many of these preferences are rapidly evolving—particularly for young affluent travellers. For example, Chinese travellers tend to be more spontaneous and have shorter planning timelines than their Western counterparts. This is mainly because they love bargains, but also because planning for a vacation three to six months in advance is not the cultural norm in China. When it comes to hotels, the biggest decision factors for young affluent travellers are location, cleanliness, and price. According to TripAdvisor traveller insights of hotel preferences, the most important considerations for business and leisure travellers alike were location and reputation. Middle Class Segment in Smaller Cities Offers Biggest Growth Opportunities Similarly, a BCG 2013 survey showed that a growing number of young affluent Chinese travellers were interested in longer-haul trips. While just 20% of the most popular destinations for the past three years were long-haul trips (to the US and France), 80% of the most desired destinations for intended travel over the next five to 10 years are outside of Asia. The top “dream” destinations include Australia, with New Zealand, the Maldives, the US, France, Greece, the UK, and Italy also making the list. While sightseeing, relaxing, and shopping are popular activities amongst Chinese tourists, outdoor and adventure trips are emerging as a new trend, providing opportunities for both Australia and New Zealand to further increase their share of Chinese visitors. center_img Travellers from China will account for the lion’s share of this growth—accounting for around 40% of Asian outbound travellers by 2030. Within the same time frame, China will likely overtake the US as the world’s largest domestic travel market. Well-known “super tier 1” cities, which all have populations of more than 10 million, like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, are all highly competitive environments. The TripAdvisor-BCG report revealed that more than 80% of China’s middle-income and affluent consumers (MAC) and potential spenders live in smaller cities outside of China’s major metropolises. Source = TripAdvisor TripAdvisor revealed several important insights into the future growth direction of China’s outbound tourism market, including destinations that Chinese travellers are investigating, the cities they come from, factors that motivate their travel choices, and how businesses can better cater to their needs and preferences. Locally, Tourism Australia implemented its ‘China 2020’ strategic plan*, following results that indicated China is Australia’s most valuable inbound tourism market. Australia has experienced faster arrivals growth from China than any other market. In 2010, China was Australia’s fourth largest source of visitor arrivals with 454,000 Chinese visitors, 24 per cent higher than 2009. This is estimated to reach 860,000 potential Chinese visitors by 2020. According to data from TripAdvisor’s official site in China, daodao.com, the number of unique visitors in July and August 2013 who researched outbound destinations has increased by more than 250% (excluding Hong Kong and Macau), compared to the same period the year before. Of those who researched outbound destinations in that time, 56% researched destinations in Asia while 44% researched destination outside of the region, with Paris, Rome, London and New York amongst the most frequently researched destinations.   Specifically, by 2030, Chinese urban travellers will take 1.7 billion domestic and outbound trips annually, up from 500 million today, spending $1.8 trillion on travel and tourism—nearly seven times their current expenditures. The report shows that China’s outbound leisure market will grow the fastest, with its travel and tourism spending increasing by 15% year-on-year between now and 2030. According to 2013 data from daodao.com, more than 70% of unique site visitors researching outbound destinations lived outside the four “super tier 1” cities, and online traffic from these visitors is growing two to three times faster than that of visitors from the “super tier 1”  cities. The report also showed that businesses that reach beyond China’s “super tier 1” cities may have to further adapt their services as well as marketing and distribution models, but they also have a better chance of gaining a first-mover advantage.  last_img read more

Jerry Schwartzs newest hotel to make hay for farmers while sun shines

first_imgSource = Dr Jerry Schwartz Jerry Schwartz’s newest hotel to make hay for farmers while sun shines on Sydney hotel marketJerry Schwartz’s newest hotel to make hay for farmers while sun shines on Sydney hotel marketDr Jerry Schwartz has pledged to support Australia’s embattled farmers by donating the profits from his first night as owner of the new Four Points by Sheraton at Sydney’s Central Park.Up to $15,000 is expected to be raised for the Aussie Helpers organisation, which has been helping Australian farmers since 2002, through provision of financial support and goods, carting water and animal feed. The Schwartz Family Company will formally purchase the Four Points hotel on 8 October from developers Frasers Property Australia, who – with Sekisui House – jointly developed the hotel on the site of the former Old Kent Brewery on Broadway. The hotel was soft-opened in August. The Four Points by Sheraton is the only international hotel to open in Sydney in 2018, and will play an important role in alleviating Sydney’s hotel ‘drought’ by adding 297 rooms at a time when the city is desperate for new inventory.Dr Schwartz will follow his donation to Aussie Helpers by holding a charity event at the Four Points on 18 October, when 16 charities will take over the hotel and use the rooms to raise funds for their organisations. The charities cover a range of areas including children’s medical research and care, mental health assistance and homelessness.“I have been particularly moved by the plight of farmers in NSW and Queensland, because while they are always doing it tough, this current drought will really threaten the financial and mental wellbeing of so many families,” said Dr Schwartz.“In contrast, hoteliers like me have benefited greatly from Sydney’s extended tourism boom. Opening the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour last year, and the Four Points this year, has enabled me to hold charity events to give back to the more needy in our community, and I am hoping that we can get a full house at the Four Points on 8 October so that we can donate as much as possible to Brian and Nerida Egan’s Aussie Helpers charity.“They are doing an incredible job and I think if we city slickers can find ways of supporting our farmers, everyone benefits. Australia’s rural and regional areas are integral to every aspect of this country, and particularly its tourism and hospitality sector, so in many ways it is a logical connection to use a Sydney hotel opening to support our farmers.“I have property in the Hunter Valley and the drought has significantly affected the whole of the region, but that’s nothing compared to what farmers are having to cope with in western NSW and Queensland.”Aussie Helpers co-founder, Brian Egan, thanked Dr Schwartz for his support and urged anyone planning to visit Sydney on 8 October to book into the Four Points by Sheraton, because every dollar spent on accommodation and dining would support struggling farmers.“No one should under-estimate the severity of this drought and its long term consequences on the farming community,” said Brian Egan.“Drought is not new, and throughout the 16 years we’ve been running Aussie Helpers, there’s never been a time when farmers somewhere haven’t needed support.“I want to thank Dr Schwartz for reaching out. His commitment will not only raise funds for farmers who are in desperate need now, it will help focus attention on the long-term plight of farmers and the need to connect city people with their fellow Australians on the land.”The Four Points by Sheraton is located on Broadway in the new Central Park urban regeneration area adjacent to Central Station and the University of Technology campus.Bookings at the hotel for accommodation and dining for 8 October can be made HERElast_img read more

first_imgWashington made sure to note that the important thing is the Cardinals getting a win, but there’s little doubt he would like to get back on the highlight reel with Simpson, only this time be the one making the play. Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact Comments   Share   It was worth six points on the scoreboard, but the judges gave Simpson an 8.5 (he didn’t exactly stick the landing). The play can be seen below: The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Top Stories center_img Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires Jerome Simpson was not exactly a household name before his Bengals faced off against the Arizona Cardinals in a Week 16 matchup last season. He’s still not, as the 26-year-old has caught just four passes for 50 yards this season. Now a Viking, Simpson is best-known for a touchdown he scored his team’s 23-16 win over the Cardinals last season, a 19-yard catch-and-run that finished with the receiver leaping over Arizona linebacker Daryl Washington en route to the end zone. Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling At any rate, Washington has not forgotten about that play, which has certainly put him on the highlight reels for years to come. No, the third-year pro who has emerged as one of the NFL’s better linebackers remembers the play, and wouldn’t mind getting a little bit of payback, so to speak.“Yeah, I’ve been looking forward to it,” Washington said Friday when asked about facing Simpson again. “If he plays, he plays. If he doesn’t, then oh well. “But if he plays I’ll be sure to get back at him.”Simpson is listed as “probable” on the Vikings’ injury report with a lower back ailment. That designation means there is a virtual certainty he’ll be active Sunday, which should give Washington his shot to get a shot or two in.“I want to go out there and play as hard as I can, hopefully I can get some good shots on him if he does play,” he said. “Maybe I can catch him on a slant or, you know, just an open-field or something like that.”last_img read more

Author Krakauer denied records on rape case agains

first_imgAuthor Krakauer denied records on rape case against player HELENA, Mont. — Author Jon Krakauer’s five-year quest to find out how and why Montana’s top higher education official intervened to prevent a star college quarterback’s expulsion over a rape accusation stalled Wednesday when the state Supreme Court denied him access to those records. The 4-3 decision by the Montana Supreme Court found the former University of Montana player’s privacy rights as a student outweighs the public’s right to know what actions state Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian took in his case. Those privacy rights can’t be ignored just because he’s a star athlete whose case is already widely known, said the majority opinion written by Justice Laurie McKinnon.McKinnon faulted Krakauer, the author of “Into the Wild” and “Into Thin Air” for how he worded his public-records request in the highly publicized 2012 University of Montana case. He should have asked for more general information about sexual assault complaints and appeals that were reviewed by Christian, which would have allowed the commissioner to turn over documents with names and identifying information blacked out, McKinnon wrote.“But Krakauer requested information pertaining to one specific student, and now, no amount of redaction can protect that student’s privacy interests,” she wrote.Krakauer requested documents related to former University of Montana quarterback Jordan Johnson’s case in 2014 as he was writing the book “Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town.”Much of the book focused on Johnson, whom an acquaintance accused of rape in 2012. Johnson was acquitted of the charge in court, but he first went through the university’s internal disciplinary process, where a recommendation was made to expel him.University president Royce Engstrom upheld the expulsion. Then Johnson appealed to Christian, who oversees the state’s university system.Johnson stayed enrolled in the university, but it was never clear what action Christian took or why. Krakauer requested any documents that had to do with Christian’s intervention.Three Supreme Court justices signed a separate opinion that agreed with the majority that Johnson, who is referred to as John Doe, has a right to privacy. But they said they would have ordered the release of information that discloses Christian’s action and the grounds for it.Justice Jim Rice wrote that the public’s right to know how a high official in state government exercised his authority is important, and a limited release of information on Christian’s actions should be allowed.“Did the commissioner make a decision on appropriate legal grounds? Did he exhibit favouritism? Was he subject to outside influence?” Rice wrote. “The court concludes that the wording of the request sinks the request entirely, and no records whatsoever can be released. In light of the critical importance of the right to know, I believe that conclusion is error.”The ruling, which overturns a lower court’s order to release the records, will be the final word in the case unless Krakauer asks the U.S. Supreme Court to take it up. Krakauer and his attorney, Mike Meloy, did not immediately respond to a call and emails for comment on Wednesday.Vivian Hammill, an attorney for the state Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education, said the ruling is important to all students and gives sound guidance on how to request records in the future.“Commissioner Clay Christian greatly values the public’s right to know, but when it comes to student records that have enhanced privacy protections, those protections must be weighed very carefully,” Hammill said.Matt Volz, The Associated Press by Matt Volz, The Associated Press Posted Jul 3, 2019 2:21 pm PDTcenter_img AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Emaillast_img read more

Economy not expected to grow before 2016

first_imgCyprus’ gross domestic product growth projections for 2015 have been revised downwards by almost a full percentage point, from a positive 0.4 per cent to a negative 0.5 per cent, according to the European Commission’s Spring 2015 economic forecast, released on Tuesday. The revision compares unfavourably with a projected EU-wide 1.8 per cent GDP growth average – 1.5 per cent for the Euro area – and reflects negative contributions from domestic demand for oil and net exports, though plateauing unemployment signals “further adjustment of the labour force”.Exports, which recorded a 5.7 per cent spike in 2014 following a sharp 5.0 per cent drop the year before, are projected to drop moderately by 0.3 per cent this year, before picking up again by 1.5 per cent in 2016.Imports, on the other hand, followed a similar pattern, with a 13.6 per cent drop in 2013 followed by an 8.1 per cent recovery, while 2015 will see a 0.2 drop before picking up again in 2016 – by 1.0 per cent. The growth momentum, the report said, is not expected to resume until 2016, when household and corporate deleveraging enable sustainable growth, while insolvency and foreclosure rules should have helped address the burning issue of non-performing loans, allowing the banking sector much-needed breathing space and the gradual restoration of credit supply. However, risks to the recovery remain, including a failure to keep NPLs in check and ripples from Russia.“A failure to address high NPL ratios could lead to a more prolonged period of tight credit supply conditions, stalling the recovery of investment and weakening domestic demand,” the report warned.“On the external side, the recession in Russia could have larger negative effects on exports than anticipated.”Meanwhile, drastically consolidated government spending and improved tax collection seem to paint a brighter picture for 2015, but one-off revenues – such as high dividends from the Central Bank of Cyprus – will not be included in this year’s primary balance.“This reflects the prolonged economic recession, impacting mostly on tax revenues, but also other factors,” the forecast said.“In 2016, the general government balance is forecast to improve in line with better economic conditions.” You May LikeLivestlyChip And Joanna’s $18M Mansion Is Perfect, But It’s The Backyard Everyone Is Talking AboutLivestlyUndoPopularEverythingColorado Mom Adopted Two Children, Months Later She Learned Who They Really ArePopularEverythingUndoYahoo SearchYou’ve Never Seen Luxury Like This On A Cruise Ship.
