The Tick Cast and Crew Walk the Blue Carpet Tease the Series

first_imgStay on target Ahead of Amazon’s The Tick releasing next Friday, August 25, the show celebrated its premiere at the Village East Theater in New York. Geek was there as the cast and crew of the hotly anticipated superhero parody walked the blue carpet (’cause, you know, The Tick), and we got to ask them a few questions about the upcoming first season. They have some awfully big tights to fill, and from the sounds of things, they’re aware of that. Fortunately, they seem more than up to the task.Producer Barry Josephson came out first, and shared why he feels like it was the perfect time to bring The Tick back. A lot of it had to do with Iron Man. “I just love the Marvel movies,” he said. “When we produced the version of The Tick in 2001, I just loved working with Ben Edlund, but it felt like we didn’t get to finish that version, and it felt like now is the time. I think we were a little ahead of the curve. The greatest pleasure for me was going back to Ben, and saying ‘Ben, I think it’s time.”Josephson says that if Edlund was going to bring The Tick back for a third time, he was going to grow the show. “It’s more realistic. Still very funny, but the characters are more grounded in a different kind of reality than the other show. The other show was a little bit campy, and this show is a little more realistic, or more like a Marvel world,” he said.I had to ask about whether or not we were going to see some of the stranger villains from the ’90s cartoon, and Josephson really hopes so. He says at Comic Con, somebody asked about the possibility of seeing Chairface Chippendale in the new series. While they don’t have the rights to any of the characters from the cartoon, Josephson would like to use them eventually. Especially since they have so many fans. “And I’m a fan. So, I think we will look back on some of those characters and see if we can bring them forward, but for this season, what I think Ben did great was invent new characters.” Josephson said. “That’s a really great part of growing a franchise. If you see great things and the work for you, maybe you miss some of the things you grew up on a little less.”Make no mistake, the new Tick is incredibly different, regarding tone and style, then what’s come before. Edlund also told us a little bit about bringing The Tick back to TV after 16 years. “It’s been about a four-year venture. It took a lot of re-engineering to make it resonate with the time, and make it useful,” he said. “It could have also just been more blood circulating through the corporate content engine. I wanted it to maybe have some relevance, and I think we found that.” Edlund had nothing but praise for Amazon, saying he was amazed at how much free expression was encouraged in their partnership. “We say it so often that it sounds like a cliche, but this has been an extraordinary amount of freedom and support that Amazon offered. So, we took it.”Ben EdlundThat freedom let Edlund ground Arthur and make the story follow his journey this time around. “It’s been around for 30 years, so I thought maybe it’s time to give The Tick some real psychological dimension. It’s really an interesting tone.” Edlund also wanted to bring more action into the series, feeling that was something the previous live action show lacked. “That’s part of what The Tick, to me, needs.” Even taking a different approach with the new series, The Tick still retains its essential earnestness and heart. Edlund says that earnestness was what he was afraid to mess with, but he feels it really landed in the new series.Donning the blue tights this time is Peter Serafinowicz, who is the third actor to play the titular Tick. Knowing that, Serafinowicz says he made sure not to watch any of the previous incarnations of the character. “I just tried to make it my own, tried to do my own interpretation. I didn’t want to copy anyone else’s,” he said.Peter Serafinowicz“The Tick’s the embodiment of the spirit of the superhero. Like, the old-fashioned saving a cat, saving people from a bus crashing off a cliff, killing bad guys…” he corrected himself here. “Not killing, punching bad guys. He’s very anti-murder.” Serafinowicz says he feels that there aren’t many superheroes like that these days. “They’re sort of less concerned about those things, and I think superheroes should worry about those things. Just saving people, you know?” He also recognizes that The Tick has been a very tw0-dimensional character in the past, and you can’t have a show in 2017 where a main character doesn’t change or grow. Serafinowicz hints that we’ll start to see some of that growth in the new series. “The Tick’s totally selfless. He doesn’t think about himself. He just wants to help people. It’s when he starts thinking about himself, and where he came from and ‘why am I here,’ and all those questions that we all ask ourselves at three in the morning that his problems start.”Serafinowicz says working on the series has given him sympathy for anyone who has to don a superhero costume, whether for a movie or theme park job. “I get very emotional when I think about those people in those costumes. It’s awful. I want to do a sad commercial about it, maybe start a charity.” Anyone reading this who works at Disneyland is probably saying, “Nah, but for real though” right now.Even though the show is called The Tick, the main character is Arthur. Actor Griffin Newman says he had a hard time convincing his friends that he was the star of the show. “It was a big surprise to me, and I kept on telling all my friends, ‘I’m like the lead on this show.’ And when they all saw the pilot when it came out, they were like ‘You’re the main guy!’ And I’m like, ‘yeah, I told you,’ and they’re like, ‘we thought you were lying or delusional!’”Griffin NewmanYes, Arthur is the star of The Tick, which means that Newman gets to play a superhero, something he never thought possible. “It was my number one insane career pipe dream, that I thought was never gonna happen because I’m a 5’6″ Jew with arthritis and anxiety issues. I thought there was no superhero that I could actually fit into.” Newman says he got close to playing Michelangelo in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, but the producers thought he was too neurotic. “I thought that was my one chance and it was out the window. Then I got this script, and I was like, ‘Oh right! It’s the one neurotic superhero.’” For Newman, playing a superhero was a childhood dream. He says he used to practice superhero movie poster poses in the bathroom mirror as a kid. And yes, he got to reenact those poses for The Tick’s promo shots. “This could quickly turn into a therapy session between you and I,” he said. “But it’s very cool.”Newman also spoke about playing a very different version of Arthur from any iteration that’s come before. He says he doesn’t think this version of the character overrides anything that’s been done before; it’s just a deeper exploration of Arthur. “We’re adding more layers; we’re building more into the house. It was always a great character,” he says. “I think by [Edlund’s] own admission, in previous versions of his work, The Tick has always been more of a comedic archetype. He wanted to see if he could make Arthur someone you could pin a hero’s journey onto and make you care. It would be intimidating to have to play a character that so many people have played so well, but because there are so many new aspects of it, it feels like I have free reign to do what I want with it.”Valorie CurryRounding out the good guys of the series is Arthur’s sister, Dot. Dot, a medic, has been a part of previous incarnations of The Tick but she has a far more significant role in this one. Actor Valorie Curry says she spoke at length with Edlund about who this character was, but for her part, she focused on the character’s relationship with Arthur, considering they both lived through the same trauma. They just dealt with it in very different ways. “It led him to become ill and incapable of existing in the world with everyone else,” she said. “Dot, on the other hand, had to compartmentalize all of that and become a doer. She became the person who took care of Arthur; she always had to keep moving.” As the series goes on, we’ll discover that Dot will eventually have to deal with all that grief and anger that she’s compartmentalized, Curry said.I asked whether she’d like to see Dot don a superhero costume at some point, and Curry wasn’t so sure. “My impulse is to say yes, but what I think is really lovely about Dot is that she’s one of the few characters who isn’t super, but she is the most superhero of all of them. She is so capable; she is so intelligent, she is so powerful. She is actually saving people’s lives every day, she just gets a paycheck for it and has to wear really ugly pants. She’s already got her super-suit, she doesn’t really need more. I think that lends her her air of the unimpressed when she meets superheroes throughout this world.”That “air of the unimpressed” is part of what makes this version of The Tick so special. The whole thing is played completely straight. Actor Brendan Hines plays Superian, an alien who came to Earth as a young child and has god-like superpowers. (Now who could this character be based on?) Even though the character is an obvious parody, he plays it completely straight. “That’s the thing that Ben Edlund was very specific about. He said the best way to play this is to play it straight. The stakes are very high… Ben said the funniest thing to do would be to play The Tick completely straight.” That said, Hines says that The Tick makes him wish other superheroes were funnier. “I wish they had a little bit more heart. Maybe I’m just comparing them to ours, but that’s, I think, the best thing about our show is that it’s very funny and has a lot of heart. That’s something that I don’t necessarily feel in all those (other) films.” Hines says that heart comes from the relationships between the characters and the inherent kindness in the show’s humor.Jackie Earle HaleyOf course, even with all the talk of kindness and playing it straight, there was certainly a lot of fun to be had making this show. Jackie Earle Haley, who plays the series’s main villain, The Terror, said he had fun embracing the fact that his character is somehow 140 years old, still alive and driven by pure evil. “He’s kind of literally the exact opposite of The Tick,” Haley said. “The Tick is kind of an old superhero in the sense that he doesn’t have all that angst and backstory and revenge that he’s seeking, he just stands for pure goodness. And it’s just kind of fun and refreshing.” Haley says that this is the first time The Tick has parodied comic book movies specifically, which is especially exciting considering how inundated we are with them these days.A lot of work went into getting the tone just right for each character. The world of The Tick is heightened and ridiculous, but the actors weren’t allowed to go too over-the-top. Yara Martinez says that her biggest supervillain inspiration for her portrayal of Ms. Lint was Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford in Mommy Dearest. When you watch her in the show, there are definite hints of Dunaway in Martinez’s performance (particularly in her facial expressions). She did not get to do that big, “no wire hangers EVER!”-style scream, though. “I did do a little… the first few days on set, I did try a few things I was inspired by, and they were like, ‘bring it down a little bit.’ That was pretty much my directing note the entire time, and then we found the tone together.”Yara MartinezMs. Lint is a particularly cool character in the new series, especially because she based her villain persona on the mean name kids called her when she was young. “She embraces it because that was a lesson she learned. That’s what’s interesting and really beautiful about this is that Ben’s humanized these superheroes and supervillains. So you find out that ‘Ms. Lint’ that’s how the kids bullied her. Making fun of the fact that her powers didn’t work and the lint would get stuck to her. And then she learned how to turn [that power] into a success. Even though it’s completely ridiculous, there is a moral lesson in that, which I think is kind of beautiful,” Martinez said.We also got to talk to John Pirkis, who you might know from Doctor Who or Daredevil. He plays Dr. Karamazov, who isn’t in the first six episodes very much. He has one brief appearance, but he promised he’d play a much larger role in the second batch of episodes, coming in 2018. Pirkis also said that he’s never had a character arc as crazy as Karamazov’s. “The only thing I can say is, by accident rather than by design, I possess something that no one else in the universe does, and everyone wants to get their hands on.”John PirkisPirkis also said he loved the collaborative atmosphere of working on The Tick. He got to work directly with Edlund in shaping exactly what kind of character Karamazov was. Interestingly, he also was happy about getting to read the entire script during production. Apparently, that wasn’t the case on Daredevil. That may not come as a surprise, considering how secretive Marvel is about everything, but Pirkis says that while shooting Daredevil, he didn’t know until after he was done whether he was a good guy or a bad guy. “This was much, much better,” he said. “I was allowed to put in a lot more input than I could with Daredevil.” Pirkis says he does have a favorite suggestion that made it into the show, but he couldn’t tell us what it was. He says he’s pretty sure it happens in episode eight. So, look out for that in 2018.Amazon’s reboot of The Tick, is an incredibly fun, thoughtful parody of superhero movies that retains the heart and kindness that’s always been core to the character. That heart clearly had an effect on the cast, who see The Tick as something truly special. From the sounds of things, it was just as fun to make as it will be to watch. The first half of the season premieres on Amazon Prime on August 25, with the second half coming sometime in 2018.Photos by Sheilah Villari Our Favorite TV Superheroes RankedThe Funniest Thing About The Tick Is that It’s a Legitimately Great Show center_img Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img read more

How many are being held in detention without speedy trail? How many are convicted?  What offences have they been convicted of? What are the sentences? Fears Of Brain Drain Hit West Wing Amid Trump Staff Exits

first_img Share AP Photo/Susan WalshPresident Donald Trump listens as Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven speaks during a news conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Tuesday, March 6, 2018.President Donald Trump once presided over a reality show in which a key cast member exited each week. The same thing seems to be happening in his White House.Trump’s West Wing has descended into a period of unparalleled tumult amid a wave of staff departures, yet the president insists it’s a place of “no Chaos, only great Energy!” The latest to announce his exit is Gary Cohn, Trump’s chief economic adviser, who had clashed with the boss over trade policy.Cohn’s departure has sparked internal fears of an even larger exodus, raising concerns in Washington of a coming “brain drain” around the president that will only make it more difficult for Trump to advance his already languishing policy agenda.Multiple White House officials said the president has been pushing anxious aides to stay on the job.“Everyone wants to work in the White House,” Trump said during a news conference Tuesday. “They all want a piece of the Oval Office.”The reality is far different.Vacancies abound in the West Wing and the broader Trump administration, with some jobs never filled and others subject to repeat openings. The position of White House communications director is soon to be empty again after the departure of its fourth occupant, Hope Hicks.“They are left with vacancies atop of vacancies,” said Kathryn Dunn-Tenpas of the Brookings Institution who tracks senior-level staff turnover. Her analysis shows the Trump departure rate has reached 40 percent in just over a year.“That kind of turnover creates a lot of disruption,” she said, noting the loss of institutional knowledge and relationships with agencies and Congress. “You can’t really leave those behind to your successor.”Turnover after a year in office is nothing new, but this administration has churned through staff at a dizzying pace, and allies are worried the situation could descend into a free-fall.One White House official said there is concern about a potential “death spiral” in the West Wing, with each departure heightening the sense of frenzy and expediting the next.Multiple aides who are considering departing, all speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters, said they didn’t have a clue about whom the administration could find to fill their roles. They said their desire to be team players has kept them on the job longer than planned. Some said they were nearing a breaking point.“You have situations where people are stretched to take on more than one job,” said Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project. She cited the example of Johnny DeStefano, who oversees the White House offices of personnel, public liaison, political affairs and intergovernmental affairs. “Those are four positions that in most administrations are each headed by an assistant to the president or a deputy assistant,” Kumar said. The overlap between those qualified to work in the White House and those willing to take a job there has been shrinking too, according to White House officials and outside Trump allies concerned about the slow pace of hires.Trump’s mercurial decision-making practices, fears of being drawn into special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation and a stalled legislative agenda are keeping top-flight talent on the outside.“Most of all, President Trump hasn’t demonstrated a scrap of loyalty to current and former staff, and everyone knows it,” said Michael Steel, a former aide to onetime Gov. Jeb Bush, R-Fla., and ex-House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.Trump acknowledged that he is a tough boss, saying he enjoys watching his closest aides fight over policy.“I like conflict,” he said Tuesday.Since his days on the campaign, Trump has frequently and loudly complained about the quality of his staff, eager to fault his aides for any mishaps rather than shouldering responsibility. His attacks on his staff have sharpened in recent weeks, and he has suggested to confidants that he has few people at his side he can count on, according to two people familiar with his thinking who were not authorized to discuss private conversations publicly.Hicks’ departure will leave a gaping hole in the president’s inner circle. She served as both media gatekeeper and confidante.A number of other aides have expressed worry about the legal implications — and steep bills — they could face if ensnared in Mueller’s probe. It has had a chilling effect on an already sluggish White House hiring process, according to officials, and there is wide concern that working for Trump could negatively affect career prospects.Meanwhile, hopes for significant governing achievements in the coming years, along the lines of the tax cuts passed in December, are growing fleeting, as Republicans face a daunting electoral environment this fall.Morale has plunged among West Wing aides in recent weeks. Some point to the departure of staff secretary Rob Porter in mid-February as beginning the tailspin.Porter was a popular figure, but his departure undid some of the progress made on streamlining the White House’s chaotic policy process. Allegations of domestic violence against him stunned co-workers. A permanent replacement has yet to be named. Moreover, chief of staff John Kelly’s shifting explanations for how he handled the Porter matter — including, in the eyes of some, outright lies — damaged his reputation among staffers who had seen Kelly as a stabilizing force in a turbulent West Wing. The administration has been understaffed from the onset, in part due to the president’s refusal to consider hiring even the most qualified Republicans if they opposed him during the campaign, according to a White House official not authorized to speak publicly about personnel matters. But some aides insisted that Trump would not have trouble finding qualified replacements.“At the end of the day, I liken what goes on here to a football team like the New England Patriots, rights?” Peter Navarro, the director of the White House’s Trade and Manufacturing Policy office, said on Bloomberg TV. “Like every year, the Patriots win the division, but they do it with different players. What doesn’t change is the coach and the quarterback, and that’s what we have in Donald Trump.”The White House did not immediately announce a replacement for Cohn, whose deputy, Jeremy Katz, left in January. Among those under consideration for Cohn’s job are CNBC commentator Larry Kudlow and Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney, according to a person familiar with the discussions. In a riff Saturday at the Gridiron Dinner, an annual white-tie affair featuring journalists and officials, Trump engaged in a rare bout of self-deprecating humor, comparing the Oval Office job with his past career as the host of the reality-television show “The Apprentice.”“In one job I had to manage a cutthroat cast of characters, desperate for TV time, totally unprepared for their roles and their jobs and each week afraid of having their asses fired, and the other job I was the host of a smash television hit.”Several White House aides in the audience laughed in their tailcoats and ball gowns. But the joke, they knew, was on them.last_img read more
